On ‘Islamic Art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’

The Met’s curator in charge of its extensive Islamic art collection

will speak Dec. 2 at livestreamed 1 p.m. event open to the public

NEW YORK, Nov.18, 2022—The Lifelong Peer Learning Program (LP²), a program of the CUNY Graduate Center, will feature Navina Najat Haidar addressing “Islamic Art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art” at its next [email protected] program on Dec. 2. Dr. Haidar is the curator in charge of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Department of Islamic Art, considered one of the world’s premier collections with more than 15,000 objects reflecting the great diversity and range of Islam’s cultural traditions.

Dr. Haidar was the coordinating curator of the New Islamic Galleries project, called by The New York Times “a cosmopolitan trove of exotic beauty” when it opened at The Met in 2011. Speaking about the museum’s Islamic art collection, Dr. Haidar said, “These works take on renewed relevance in today’s world, where they can provide much-needed insight into Islamic culture and history. Through art we also recognize the intersection of Islamic cultures with other great civilizations and the syncretic themes they gifted the world.”

The New Islamic Galleries project that Dr. Haidar oversaw presents an extraordinary sequence of galleries dedicated to the art of the Arab lands: Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and South Asia. It includes the reinstallation of more than 1,000 objects as well as the Patti Cadby Birch Moroccan Court, constructed on site at The Met by a team of craftsmen from Fez.

She is currently working on a major Met exhibition scheduled for 2024, “Jahangir: Emperor, Connoisseur, Naturalist of the Mughal Age.”
