The Cake Boys Present Takes the Cake: Season Two!

Takes the Cake is BACK! And it’s bigger, badder, and stickier than ever….

In the Summer of 2021, The Cake Boys, NYC’s premiere drag king collective, held their first ever drag competition for drag kings, things, and other queer performers called Takes the Cake. The 5 week competition brought out 40 new performers from all through New York (and New Jersey and one person from Chicago!). In a grand finale packed at Brooklyn’s 3 Dollar Bill, the competition crowned its first winner: the multitalented visionary artist and musician, Klondyke. Since its inaugural show, the competition has been nominated for a Glam Award and has heralded an alumni of drag kings such as Themme, Lucky Pierre, Mx. Lestrange, and Tuna Melt, who have all continued to storm stages throughout New York as producers and performers.

After over 80 applications from drag kings across the tri-state area, this year’s competition will feature 40 performers (and even one boy band!), both new and well versed in New York nightlife. Each round contestants will take it to the stage to battle it out in a cavalcade of lip sync smack downs and uncouth challenges including an absurdist truth or dare, a lipsync roulette, prop challenges, runway walks and more. Judged by New York nightlife icons, such as Uncle Freak, C’etait Bontemps, Theydy Bedbug, and God Complex, the top two winners from each preliminary round will move onto the finale on January 29th, 2023 for a chance to win a grand prize worth over $1,000 and to take home the Takes the Cake crown. 

Audience members will have the opportunity to be immersed in the realm of the Cake Boys as soon as they enter the competition space – with tables from local queer vendors, oddball photo opps, an extravagant merch table with unlikely purchases, ridiculous stage gags and scenery, and animated intermission videos. 

The competition will take place at 3 Dollar Bill (260 Meserole Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11206).
