Summer LGBT Dance Social with Brooklyn Contra

Come out to Queens Botanical Garden for an evening of LGBTQ+ joy with NYC’s most approachable social dance!

Join Brooklyn Contra for a summer celebration of Appalachian folk with a Barn Dance to live music. All dances will be taught and appropriate for adults and kids 8 and up, no experience necessary! This event is open to all with a focus on celebrating queer community in Queens. LGBTQ+ folks, friends, family, allies, or anyone excited to dance together are all welcome.

Contra is an easy-to-learn folk dance (similar to square dancing with some swing dance flair) that comes with a free lesson and amazing live tunes! Originating in northern Appalachia based on English and French formal dances, contra is now danced around the country by multi-generational communities. Bringing a partner isn’t necessary as folks switch partners between each dance. This group dance is entirely gender-nonconforming and anyone of any gender can dance any part they want! The QBG bar will be open and available selling fun drinks and refreshments.

Brooklyn Contra hosts bi-weekly dances at Camp Friendship in Park Slope. More information can be found at www.brooklyncontra.org

This event is part of our “extended summer evening” events and the cost is admission to the garden. Visitors to the garden are welcome to stay for our extended evenings, so feel free to come earlier! If you are a member of either Queens Botanical Garden or Brooklyn Contra and you recieve free attendance to QBG or BkC events please select “Member” at checkout.
