I AM SYLVIA, The Musical honoring Sylvia Rivera

“I Am Sylvia” is a new musical that brings to life the fierce, unapologetic spirit of Sylvia Rivera—Latina, trans icon, and one of the earliest fighters for LGBTQ+ liberation in New York City. Set in El Barrio, where her voice once echoed through marches and community spaces, the show blends powerful music, humor, and emotion to reveal the woman behind the legend.

Written by Abimael Acosta, “I Am Sylvia” dives into Sylvia’s humanity: her struggles with homelessness, addiction, chosen family, activism, and the radical love that defined her mission. The production invites today’s audiences to meet Sylvia not only as a historic figure, but as a survivor, a dreamer, and a relentless force for justice whose message remains urgent in 2024.
