For first time since 2019, Brooklyn Waldorf School to host Annual Winter Fair

open to the public on Saturday, December 3rd

On Saturday, December 3, 2022, Brooklyn Waldorf School will host its first inside-the-building Winter Fair since Covid-19 hit New York City. The annual event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is open to the public, featuring many of the unique features that have made Winter Fair so popular with families for more than 15 years. All are welcome; there is no entrance charge.

“Bringing children and families together in a joyful, communal way is more important now than ever,” said Ms. Christina Pantazis-Blades, Head of School for Brooklyn Waldorf. “We’re so grateful to have this opportunity to welcome people back into our historic building at the corner of Claver Place and Jefferson Ave, which we like to call Claver Castle.”

Over the years, Brooklyn Waldorf Winter Fair has provided magical hands-on holiday memories for thousands of families and children. The school is excited to rebuild the tradition after the Covid-19 pandemic prevented a full celebration of Winter Fair in 2020 and 2021. Winter Fair 2022 will see a return to all four floors of the building being open to the public, offering great food, live music, unique performances, old fashioned children’s games, and whimsical activities at every turn.

“We’re having so much fun making the Fair this year,” said Ms. Leecia Manning, Winter Fair Coordinator since 2016.  “After the difficulty of the last few years, it feels even more meaningful to create something like The Crystal Cave or The Sea Room, for children to find the wonder and joy they crave and deserve, that they can share with friends and family”.

There’s something to delight everyone at the Winter Fair, which is a fundraiser for the independent school, while also being part of the rich festival life that is important in Waldorf education. Hands-on traditional activities such as candle-making and plant-dyeing add to the educational component of the experience, but of course kids just know it’s neat to make something with their own hands.

The one-of-a-kind event will also feature the return of the Winter Fair Marketplace, where premium local vendors will offer fine crafts, arts, handwork items, collectibles, foods and more.

“Before Covid, more than 1500 people from Brooklyn and beyond attended the Winter Fair each year for our unique blend of crafts, food and imaginative entertainment–as far away from “screen time” as it can be,” said Ms. Manning. “It’s a wonderful way to spend a December Saturday with your family and friends.”

Founded in 2005, Brooklyn Waldorf School is located at 11 Jefferson Avenue in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn and within a short 3-minute walk of the Franklin Avenue C and S subway stop. The independent, coeducational Early Childhood-8th Grade day school offers a strong Waldorf/Steiner curriculum, based on the values of imagination, integrity, hard work, kindness, personal and social responsibility, and mutual respect.

The school’s faculty are dedicated to providing a rigorous, liberal arts education that focuses on the development of the whole human being. Emphasis is placed on a multidisciplinary approach to learning through a curriculum that balances the physical, artistic, social and intellectual needs of students. The nurturing environment and diverse community enable students to excel as educated and compassionate individuals whose lives are enriched by their lifelong passion for learning.
